About This Webinar
The American Veterinary Medical Association, along with the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the American Animal Hospital Association and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians have endorsed a consensus document which was put for the by the Veterinary Task Force on Feline Sterilization for Age of Spay and Neuter Surgery for cats by the age of five months. In the consensus document, these leading veterinary organizations recognize that pregnancy can occur by the age of five months and that there is lack of evidence for harm with early-age sterilization.
Early spay/neuter will significantly reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, in turn reducing relinquishment of kittens to animal shelters and the burden on shelter resources and staff, and increasing the number of lives saved.
By the end of the webinar, participants will:
- Hear what led to the 2017 change in the AVMA’s recommended age for cat spay/neuter
- Understand the potential impact of changing the generally accepted age of cat spay/neuter
- Learn how to implement this change in private veterinary practices and shelter environments
- Gather specific techniques that make spay/neuter of 4- to 5-month-old cats efficient and safe
This webinar is intended for veterinarians working in private practice, animal shelters or spay/neuter clinics as well as animal welfare workers.
This webinar has been approved by AAVSB RACE for 1.0 continuing education credits for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
